Wayland Electricity Choice To Change Price, Move To Single Option
Along with a new price, Wayland Electricity Choice will transition from three options to just one.
WAYLAND, MA — Changes are coming to Wayland Electricity Choice this May, including a new electricity supply price and a simplified program structure for participants.
The town’s group electricity-buying program, which secures a fixed supply rate for the electricity portion of Eversource bills, will switch to a single pricing option beginning in May 2026. Since launching in May 2024, the program has delivered significant savings, with the average household saving about $284 compared to Eversource supply rates. Altogether, participants have saved more than $1.3 million, according to the town.
Under state law, most electricity customers in Wayland are automatically enrolled in the program, though participants may opt out at any time without penalty. More than 200 Massachusetts communities operate similar aggregation programs.

The program’s current contract with First Point Power is set to expire this spring and will be replaced by a new agreement with the same supplier. The new rate will be 14.776 cents per kilowatt-hour, fixed for 25 months from May 2026 through June 2028.
Town officials said the new rate is expected to provide savings compared with Eversource’s current residential and small-business supply prices, though future savings cannot be guaranteed.

Along with the new price, Wayland Electricity Choice will transition from three options: Economy, Standard Green, and 100% Green, to a single offering for all participants.
The change reflects broader shifts in the energy market. When the program launched, Wayland offered higher renewable energy content by purchasing additional renewable energy certificates (RECs) beyond what state law requires. These certificates are intended to support the development of new renewable energy projects by increasing demand.
However, officials said recent federal policy changes, including the rollback of tax incentives, permitting slowdowns, and new regulatory barriers, have reduced the effectiveness of these additional REC purchases in driving new renewable energy development.
As a result, the town is consolidating the program into one option.
Participants currently enrolled in the program do not need to take any action. The new rate will automatically take effect in May and will appear on June Eversource bills. The town will also send notification letters to participants in April.
Residents and businesses who prefer not to participate can opt out at any time with no fee.
