WAYLAND, MA — A series of vehicle break-ins reported this week has prompted a warning from Wayland police.
The Wayland Police Department is actively investigating several break-ins reported across town, police announced on Wednesday. The department did not identify the locations, specify what was stolen or say whether investigators believe the cases are connected.
Police urged residents and visitors to lock their vehicles and remove valuables or secure them out of sight. Handbags, wallets and electronics left visible inside vehicles have historically been targeted, according to the department.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also recommends closing and locking all windows and doors, taking vehicle keys and parking in well-lit areas when possible. Drivers should never leave valuables inside a vehicle where they can be seen from outside.
Wayland has experienced similar incidents in the past. Multiple vehicles were broken into along Winthrop Road and Trinity Place between 3 and 7 a.m. in August 2023, Patch reported at the time. Police sought security camera footage from residents following those break-ins.
Patch also reported a regional increase in 2021, when vehicles were targeted along Wayland's Route 30 corridor and in nearby communities. Police said at the time that many targeted vehicles had been left unlocked, though windows were broken in some incidents outside Wayland to reach items left in plain sight.
