Back-to-School Stories, As Bright As New Shoes!

Even for older children beginning school can be an anxious time and so there are lots of school stories to help ease the transition. Check some of these out from the Wayland Public Library!

It’s that time of year again! The air is cooler and thoughts have turned to the new school year. Even for older children, beginning school can be an anxious time and so there are lots of school stories to help ease the transition. New shoes and school supplies can’t hurt either!

School books are a popular part of our collection, here are a few of my favorites. There are so many more stories to be discovered at the Wayland Public Library. www.waylandlibrary.org Be sure to visit us soon!

First Day Hooray by Nancy Poydar.
Ivy is nervous about starting school … turns out she isn’t the only one. Everyone from the bus driver to the principal wants to make sure they are ready and that the first day of school goes smoothly. Wayland author and illustrator Nancy Poydar delights with several humorous and heartfelt stories taking place during the early elementary school years. Be sure to check them out!

Pete the Cat Rocking in My School Shoes by Eric Litwin.
Pete, the incorrigible blue cat from Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes (A Wayland Library storytime favorite) is heading off to school! He’s got his new school shoes (always a highlight when I was starting school) and he is ready for anything. A bouncy beat will keep you humming Pete’s song all day long!

The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School by Laura Murray.
A just-baked Gingerbread Man is left behind in class. He runs, slides, skips and  limps (after a mishap with a soccer ball) as fast as he can through the gym, art class and even the principal's office to try and find the kids who made him! Sweet and silly!

Is Your Buffalo Ready for Kindergarten? by Audrey Vernick.
The first time I read this book I laughed out loud! It still makes me giggle with its silly premise of a buffalo going to kindergarten and amusing drawings by Daniel Jennewein. But its message rings loud and clear: “Everyone’s special in his or her own way. That’s the kind of thing you learn in kindergarten.”

Bea and Mr. Jones by Amy Schwartz.
This was one of my favorite stories growing up. Bea is tired of kindergarten and her father, Mr. Jones, is tired of going to work. So one day they decide to switch places! Hilarity, and a few surprises, ensue.

What are your favorite back-to-school books?
