Blog: Exercise is Great Medicine for Diabetes
Regular exercise is helpful to people with diabetes for many reasons. This blog lists some benefits and tips during exercise.

Do you or someone you know have diabetes? An article in this month's edition of the American College of Sports Medicine news reminds us that "Regular physical activity is an essential tool in glycemic control and overall health for everyone with diabetes." It goes on to say that "numerous studies have shown that gains in lean weight from resistance training improve glucose tolerance in men and women with type 2 diabetes."
Benefits of exercise to diabetics include the following:
- glucose tolerance
- weight control
- improving blood circulation
- lowering LDL cholesterol
- reducing stress
Before exercise, diabetics should get clearance from their physician. Before and during exercise sessions, they should monitor their glucose levels to make sure it is at a safe level (about 100 to 250 mg/dL says The Mayo Clinic), and have a snack on hand if it needs adjustment.
