Mulch for Healthy Gardens and Backs

Mulching with compost provides for healthy gardens and backs!

While a mulched bed presents a uniform, well-cared-for look, mulch also provides for a low-maintenance and enjoyable garden. I know of no one who enjoys weeding, and my back certainly isn’t a fan. Mulch will help smother weeds that might be waiting to grow. This insulating layer of organic material will also retain moisture at the soil surface, thus keeping cherished plants from drying out. Finally, it will protect soil from erosion due to direct rainfall and runoff.

Compost for mulch

Why not consider compost or partially composted mulch this year? Throughout the year, the mulch decomposes and adds nutrients and structure to the soil. We like to use coarse organic compost on perennial beds – fewer weeds and by the end of winter it is incorporated into the soil thus encouraging microbial growth and those important worms.
