Your Youth Librarian at the Wayland Farmers' Market
I'm exploring this summer's farmers' markets with suggestions for good reads.
August has kept me busy with weekly storytimes at the Wayland Farmers' Market held at . I’m there every Wednesday with a bag of books and my bright red ukulele. Turns out I am not a musical prodigy on the charmingly little instrument but with the help of the storytime audience I get by! I’m so inspired by Farmers' Markets. You have your choice of amazing ingredients from brightly colored produce to the finest cuts of meat. I’ve been to markets that sell fresh eggs, organic honey, cut flowers, yummy gelato and local wines. Your purchases support local farms and it’s a great community meeting area. Whether I’m at my neighborhood market or the one in Wayland I always see friendly faces.
This week I feature some of my favorite books inspired by summer farmers' markets. What are yours?
Rah, Rah, Radishes!: A Vegetable Chant by April Pulley Sayre.
I shared this one at the Farmers' Market storytime. Vibrant photos of all your favorite vegetables (and some new ones too) fill each page. The upbeat cheer and the glossy pictures are sure to convert anyone who turns their nose up at veggies!

My Farm Friends by Wendell Minor
Inspired by childhood trips to the farm, the author introduces the usual crew of barn beasts and their unique behaviors. Whimsical illustrations and lively rhyming text make this a perfect read-aloud for young animal lovers. I think I’ll use it next week at the Farmers' Market storytime!
The New Moosewood Cookbook by Mollie Katzen.
Years ago I visited a friend in Toronto and when I arrived at her home she had homemade baba ganoush waiting for me. It was delicious! The recipe is from this book, which I immediately ran out and bought once I got home! Mollie Katzen also has wonderful books for cooking with kids. Be sure to check them out!

The Farmer's Kitchen: The Ultimate Guide to Enjoying Your CSA and Farmers' Market Foods by Julia Shanks and Brett Grohsgal.
My friend Julia co-wrote this book! I’m very proud of her and if you belong to a CSA or shop at farmers' markets (or even if you just love to cook) then you must take a look at this book. It is very comprehensive and filled with inspiration.
Watch for more posts from me about happenings at the library, good reads and summer fun! Come Wednesdays in August at 2:30 p.m.
