Case Involving Teen Sexually Abusing Young Boy to Move Forward

A family is suing the town of Wayland, alleging they put their son in 'harm's way.'

WAYLAND, MA—In a lawsuit against the town of Wayland and the Education Cooperative, the family of a Wayland boy who was sexually abused is seeking documents that go back 15 years.

Lawyers for the family will argue that employees of Wayland schools put their then four-year-old son in a harmful situation, reports the Wayland Town Crier. The documents date back to the late 1990s, and the family claims that employees encouraged one of their sons to become friends with a teen classmate who had a history of sexually abusing other children.

A judge denied a motion from the town in April to dismiss the case.

According to the lawsuit, the abuser was on probation from incidents in Belmont when he started enrolled in the former Learning and Vocational Center at Wayland High School where he was allegedly encouraged to befriend the family's older son, reports the Crier. According to the report, when the abuser was invited to the boy's home, he began the abuse of the younger son.

The abuser pleaded guilty to four counts of indecent assault and battery of a child, and was sentenced to four years probation, and also had to register as a sex offender. The lawsuit charges that he still was not removed from the TEC program even after the abuse was known.
