High School Football Players of the Week

There were some outstanding, near-historic Week 1 performances. Here's some we thought stood out.

The first week of the 2016 football season is in the books. Here's a look at some of the top performances across Eastern Massachusetts.

Joey Lydon, Wayland -- Quarterback Liam Henning gets plenty of attention for his play, and rightly so, but in a 16-14 win over Hopkinton Friday it was Lydon who made the big play. The junior defensive back and three-sport athlete knocked down a fourth-quarter 2-point conversion pass that preserved Wayland's opening win.

Danny Abraham, BC High -- As much as we''d like to credit the Eagles' defensive backs for the 61-39 win over Andover and star quarterback E.J. Perry, it's hard to overlook Abraham's contributions. The junior halfback ran for 385 yards on 17 carries with four touchdowns. His yardage total was 13th best in state history for a single game.

Grant Chryssicas, Wellesley -- In a 33-6 win over New Mission, the senior captain and returning Bay State Conference All-Star ran for 142 yards, caught passes for 25 more yards, scored three touchdowns, and added 10 tackles and a sack on defense.

Sam Frelich, Lexington -- It seems like Frelich is determined to erase the memories of that-other-QB-now-at-BB&N. In a 49-23 win over Newton South, the junior quarterback threw four touchdown passes and ran for two more.

Bobby Maimaron, Duxbury -- The senior quarterback could be a permanent fixture here but it's hard to keep him off any listing of the top performances. In a 42-21 win over Bridgewater-Raynham, Maimaron was 15-of-20 for 249 yards and three touchdowns. If you're keeping track of these things, Maimaron moved into a tie with former Brockton quarterback Tom Colombo for third place on the all-time list with 85 touchdown passes.

Ethan Phelps, Whitman-Hanson -- In the Panthers' 23-6 win over Plymouth South, the sophomore quarterback passed for 252 yards and a touchdown and ran for another 138 yards and another score.

Harry Smith, Old Rochester -- The junior running back had 15 carries for 119 yards and three tackles and made eight tackles on defense as ORR beat Wareham, 28-21. More importantly ORR starts 1-0 after beginning last season with five straight losses.

Matt Andreas, Danvers -- With many on the Falcons' roster sick after a less-than-savory team dinner the night before, Andreas helped break a 7-7 fourth quarter tie with Winthrop and win, 27-7. The senior captain finished with 174 yards rushing and a four-quarter touchdown.

Colin Lama, Xaverian -- Ok, the senior linebacker didn't have gaudy numbers against Everett, but with the Hawks 24-game win streak on the line, Lama's fourth-quarter interception sealed a 17-14 Xaverian win.

Spanky and Riley Demanche, Monomoy -- In his first game back on the sideline at Monomoy, coach Spanky Demanche and the Sharks opened with a 22-6 win over Cape Tech. Son Riley fueled the win, intercepting two passes and returning one for a touchdown.

Travis Van Vleck, Nauset -- After waiting until November to win their first game last fall, Nauset opened with a 37-12 win over Coyle & Cassidy thanks to Van Vleck, who three two touchdown passes and ran for a third.
