Wayland Fire Department Awarded $15K For New Gear
The award was part of $5 million in funding to fire departments across the state.
WAYLAND, MA — The Wayland Fire Department is among hundreds of departments in the state that were awarded funding to purchase new safety equipment.
Wayland was awarded a $15,110 grant to purchase equipment, including protective gear and other tools, to keep firefighters safe on the job, and to strengthen public safety and protect first responders. The grant was part of $5 million in grant funding to fire departments across the state, the Healey-Driscoll Administration announced on Wednesday.
Wayland said it will use this funding to help purchase public safety radio equipment and a respiratory testing device. The town said that's essential for ensuring compliance and fit testing of Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus masks, which are sealed to protect against smoke and toxins.

“By securing this funding, the Wayland Fire Department will be able to invest in critical equipment for our firefighter’s safety and continue to strengthen our ability to respond and serve our community,” stated Wayland Fire Chief Neil McPherson.
The funding comes from the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services' Firefighter Safety Equipment Grant program, which provides reimbursement for purchases of around 100 different types of equipment to help comply with National Fire Protection Association and Occupational Safety and Health Administration standards.

Fire departments in Massachusetts are invited to apply for the program and receive reimbursement for items such as hoses, turnout gear, and ballistic protective equipment.
“Massachusetts firefighters answer the call in every corner of our state and our job is to make sure they have what they need to do it safely,” said Governor Maura Healey. “We're investing in the equipment that protects them on the front lines and strengthening departments in more than 300 communities so they can continue protecting all of us.”
