Wayland Violated Whistleblower Act By Firing Athletic Director
A former Wayland High School athletic director accused the school administrators of violating the state's whistleblower protection laws.
WAYLAND, MA — A federal jury found that Wayland schools and the town violated the state's Whistleblower Act. The violation comes after a former athletic director, Stephen Cass, did not have his contract renewed in 2015 after he alleged the schools treated boys and girls sports teams unequally. Cass was awarded $250,000 in the case, according to the MetroWest Daily News.
Cass brought three counts against the town, the schools and individual employees, the outlet reported. One of the allegations was that volunteers were able to coach without going through background checks and that resources for boys teams were favored over girls.
Cass said after he brought allegations of misconduct in the athletics department to the attention of administrators, his contract wasn't renewed, according to the MetroWest Daily News.
