Council On Aging Advises On Cool Spots In Hot Weather
COA office available 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Library also available.
As Monday continued under a severe heat advisory, Senior Services Director Gayle Thieme advised elder residents that they could use the Council on Aging's offices to stay cool, but only until 4 p.m., when their hours end.
Those hours are kept Monday through Friday, Thieme said, and unlike other senior centers, their office at 219 Washington St. cannot extend its hours to provide extended shelter from the heat to older residents. The Wellesley Community Center is privately owned and managed, she said, and the Council on Aging doesn't have the option of extending its hours there.
During those hours, however, "Folks can come into the building and we will make sure they are taken care of in the heat," she said.

After 4 p.m. Thieme said seniors can also seek shelter from the heat in the Wellesley Free Library, which is air conditioned. At the library this afternoon, there were very available spots left in the library's free parking lot, though there was still plenty of parking in the metered spaces. The library is open M-F 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the weekend.
The National Weather Service also issued a severe thunderstorm advisory for Monday, effective until 9 p.m.
