Grossman's Sign Down, Demolition On Site Begins

Sign taken down at about noon today at 27 Washington St.

The Grossman's sign above 27 Washington St. is down, and construction equipment is moving debris and starting demolition at the site, where National Development plans to build a senior housing facility, some of it assisted living.

Deputy Director Christopher Ketchen said the demolition permit was issued Monday.

Building the planned 138-unit facility is Cranshaw Construction of Newton. The new building will be 150,000 square feet, with a 55,000 square-foot parking garage. National Development Managing Partner Ted Tye said the major portion of the development will be luxury independent living for seniors. A small part of the development will be set aside for assisted living, he said.

Jersey barriers that had blocked off the site were removed, and traffic was slightly congested as cars were directed in both directions via traffic cones and a police officer between the location and a small road project on the other side of the street.

Lunchtime crowds were strolling back and forth past the site on the sidewalk and taking a look at the work, the first activity the plot has seen in years. "Mom! They're finally doing something!" one boy exclaimed as a group of children and a mother passed the site.
