Highway Department Doing Summer Road Resurfacing
Workers are preparing to repave several roads in town.
The Wellesley Highway Department is preparing Cameron Street for resurfacing today, part of several road projects they'll perform throughout town this summer.
This morning, a crew was busy filling in a shallow excavation in the middle of the street with hot asphalt to provide a good surface for repaving, said Kevin Collins, general foreman for the Highway Department.
The asphalt they were using was hot, about 280 degrees, Collins said. The air temperature was on its way to 87 degrees. Steam rolled off the material as the men used rakes to spread it across the road.

The road itself has already been cold-planed down by one and a half inches, he said. An additional section of the road, however, had to be taken down another two and a half inches and filled with new asphalt to provide a suitable surface for the top layer of pavement.
Cameron Street should be chip-sealed Aug. 3, then paved by the second week of August, if all goes as planned, he said. Collins said he expected the crew to finish prepping the road at about 1 p.m. today.
