Housing Authority Replacing Walkways at Washington Street Complex

36-unit development will have safer, more even paths.

The long arm of an excavator is at work beside the local headquarters of the long arm of the law. The Wellesley Housing Authority's Washington Street development, just steps from the police station, is tearing up and replacing its walkways this week.

The old walkways appeared cracked and uneven; a new surface will provide safer, more even paths for residents to walk.

The Washington Street development features 36 one-bedroom units and is one of six state-funded housing developments in town. It and developments on Morton Circle, Weston Road and River Street are designated for elderly and disabled inhabitance.

Two other developments, on Barton Road and Linden Street, include larger units designed for families.

In total, the Housing Authority oversees 230 units, which provide "decent, safe and affordable housing for low to moderate income families," according to its mission statement.
