Scout Gets Facetime with Selectmen

Hiro Yasunishi, 12, spent night at board meeting for merit badge.

Hiro Yasunishi, 12, a Boy Scout working on his Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge, sat patiently through the Aug. 2 Board of Selectmen Meeting with his parents, Yuji and Yoko.

There was a lot going on that night, but the highlight of the evening nearly escaped them as they made their way out to the parking lot. Luckily, Town Counsel Al Robinson caught up with them and invited them back to meet the selectmen as they prepared to leave for the night. Hiro, a Second Class Scout, met and shook hands with the board and spent a few minutes speaking with them while his parents looked on. Deputy Executive Director Terry Connolly, once a Boy Scout himself, said he was glad Robinson was able to catch up with the family and make the introductions.

Regarding the working portion of the evening, "I thought it was very interesting," Hiro said. He said he was excited about the hiring of new firefighters Ian McMakin and Gerard Sullivan, since he had recently attended the Youth Commission's Firefighter's Academy for youth, where he had met members of the Wellesley Fire Department. "I know the chief," Hiro said.
