This Week In Wellesley Aug. 23 - 29

Teens arrested for OUI, alcohol possession, officers hired, evidence of rodents at Community Center.

On Monday, Wellesley Patch reported on four arrests,  including Donald R. MacKenzie, 21, of 227 Ash St., Waltham, for operating under the influence of alcohol, possessing an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, marked lane violation, and speeding in violation of a special regulation.  

Monday night, Selectmen appointed three new police officers and approved a new three-year contract for Police Chief Terrence Cunningham.

On Tuesday, Democratic primary challenger Charles Rudnick held a telephone forum with voters.

Wednesday brought Patch stories on Miss Massachusetts' preparatory pageant workouts at the Miss Fit gym and the possibility that a projected increase in student enrollment at the Wellesley Middle School might be handled without outside construction

The evening ended with an update from the St. James Study Committee, including the recommendation from Town Counsel Al Robinson that an appraisal of the church property commissioned by the town should be kept secret when it's finished.

Thursday brought word of the Wellesley Police Department's assistance to the Needham Police during  their pursuit of a potentially dangerous man wanted for stealing firearms. Patch also reported when Wellesley Police apprehended the man.

The day also marked the start of Wellesley High School sports, including boys soccer, which drew more than 100 interested young athletes.

Friday was almost quiet in comparison to the rest of the week, until a visit to the Council on Aging offices at the Community Center at 219 Washington St. revealed the staff was running things from Town Hall, its food service shut down by the Health Department after evidence of rodents was discovered at the building.

Saturday brought word of Linda Virgilio, manager of the Body Shop on Central Street, who is participating in the Muscular Dystrophy Association's "lockup" fundraiser. She needs $1,600 to make her goal, and avoid a day at WCVB's Boston headquarters.
