Wellesley's Scream Tunnel for Marathon to Be 'Biggest Ever'

More than 2,000 Wellesley College students are expected to gather for the annual "Scream Tunnel" for Monday's Boston Marathon.

Historically known as the loudest cheering section along the marathon route, the section of female students applaud runners with homemade signs and kisses. The tradition started at the first Boston Marathon in 1897.

"One year after the 2013 Boston Marathon tragedy, Wellesley is rallying to create the biggest, loudest, and strongest Scream Tunnel ever," the college said in a statement.

This year, the tunnel will feature:

• Wellesley women greeting runners with cheers, kisses, and 800 signs that were requested by runners through Facebook
  
• 250 megaphones and 150 cowbells
• An art installation of thousands of origami hummingbirds—symbols of peace handmade by students and Wellesley town residents as part of the Boston Better project
