5 Ways to Save on Back-to-School Shopping: Aug. 26

Each morning, Westborough Patch presents "5 Things You Need to Know," a collection of announcements, events and reminders to help you organize your day.

1. Buy Books online: College students should consider purchasing textbooks at online sites such as Amazon.com which are often cheaper than the campus bookstore. Amazon offers new textbooks at up to 30% off and used textbooks at up to 90% off.

2. Leave the kids at Home: By shopping child-free, the urge to impluse shop is drastically reduced. Bring a list and tackle it with precision, leaving the frills behind. Take inventory and don’t buy what you don’t need.

3. Shop Around: Take the time to compare prices in newspapers. Retailers count on back-to-school sales and will offer great bargains to entice customers.

In an attempt to boost sales, has launched a program on Facebook called “1,000 Likes.” Every night at 8pm, a new deal will be posted on the site and the first 1,000 people to “like” the promotion will receive an online coupon to be redeemed in the store. The promotion will run through August and is geared towards “back to college” shopping.

5. Comparison Shop. Shopping on the internet can prove both savvy and frugal. Sites such as pricegrabber.com, shopping.com and Amazon.com allow customers to comparison shop right on the site.
