The chicken restaurant chain wants to open at Speedway Plaza on Route 9.

Chick-fil-A wants to open a chicken restaurant at Westborough's Speedway Plaza, on Route 9.

Selectmen voted Tuesday night to hire traffic engineer Ron Muller & Associates to do a peer review of Chick-fil-A's traffic study of the site, at 270 Turnpike Road, at the restaurant chain's expense.

Westborough has had similar reviews done of other projects, also at the particular applicant's expense, Town Manger Jim Malloy said.

Malloy said the project ultimately will require site plan review by selectmen.

Last summer, the restaurant chain took heat over an article in the Baptist Press.

When confronted with the company's position on traditional marriage, including its support of nonprofits who advocate unions between a man and woman, CEO Dan Cathy responded, "Guilty as charged."
