Fishing Challenge Design Winner
Local 4th grade student wins Civic Club 2018 T-shirt design contest
In recent years an integral part of the lead up to the Westborough Civic Club annual Fishing Challenge has been a competition at Mill Pond school to help design the commemorative T Shirt that is given away to every participant on the day. All students throughout grades 4-6 are encouraged to submit a drawing that is their own work, the winning entry being used to publicize the upcoming event. This year’s winner was fourth grader Amrutha Uppala (centre). 6th grader Marcus Chavez was second with Sophia Tati and Zoe D'Elia (missing from photo) joint third. Each was presented with a small token of appreciation from the Civic Club. The winning design is also used as a poster displayed throughout town in the days leading up to the event.
This will be the eleventh year of the club fully funding this event which this year is due to be held Saturday May 12th at Minute Man Park (Sandra Pond) on Upton road. Fishing times are from 9am to 1pm. Registration is free on the day and open to all ages – with multiple prizes awarded for longest fish in 3 separate age groups. With no fishing license required for this specific occasion and persons new to the pastime able to take advantage of loaner rods and reels (subject to availability) event organizer William 'Bill' Kohler is hoping that the currently predicted Saturday morning dry spell in-between recent rain showers will be enough to ensure this year's turnout surpasses even that of the past, when up to 150 people have taken part in any one year. The Civic Club is able to sponsor this event by the efforts of its volunteer membership and funds raised at the annual Tree Sale held in town.
