Girls U14 Soccer Earns Tournament Cup

For the first time since 2000, the Westborough girls' U14B team won the Nashoba Cup Tournament.

For the first time since 2000, the Westborough girls’ U14B team won the Nashoba Cup Tournament.

On Sunday, June 19, a talented group of soccer players from Westborough took top honors in the Nashoba Cub (NCup) Tournament. The Westborough girls’ U14B team took the cup in a thrilling 1-0 victory over a talented Maynard girls’ U14A team. The win marks the first time since 2000 that Westborough has won the girls U14 Nashoba Cup Championship.

The winning goal came in the first half when Hanna Spofford turned on a throw in from the sideline by Gina Bates and volleyed a long shot into the back corner of the net. Katie Bretta put on a spectacular display of goaltending in the second half to preserve the win, including stopping a penalty shot.

Hailey Limoges and Gina Bates were defensive leaders, who, along with Skye Rawson, Brittany Los, and Emily Falanga, repelled attack after attack. Margaret Baldwin, Allie Smith and Hanna Spofford battled to control the middle of the field while Maddie Mattheson, Cecelia Hogan, Juliet Ross and Lauren Almy pressured the wings both offensively and defensively. Forward, Leah Drotch, pressured Maynard’s defense and keeper repeatedly, while Michala Sokol shut Maynard down as the first half goalkeeper.

Westborough earned the right to compete for the championship by finishing its spring season undefeated at 6-0-2 and sweeping the round robin portion of the tournament hosted by Westborough on Saturday, June 16, going 3-0.

The same group of girls began playing together as a team in the fall, competing in Nashoba Valley Youth Soccer’s NCup division, and over two seasons and including the NCup tournament, amassed an undefeated record of 17-0-3 in 20 games.

The team was coached by head coach Geoff Spofford and assistant coach Paul Drotch.
