More Closures Coming To Westborough, Hopkinton Interchange

It's part of ongoing improvement work by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.

WESTBOROUGH, MA —Drivers traveling through the I-495/I-90 interchange in Westborough and Hopkinton should prepare for another round of overnight ramp closures early next week.

MassDOT announced that several ramps at the interchange will close overnight on Monday and Tuesday to allow crews to complete construction work associated with the ongoing highway overhaul.

The I-90 eastbound ramp to I-495 northbound, Exit 106, will close beginning at 11 p.m. on both Monday and Tuesday. The ramp is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. the following morning.

During those closures, drivers will be detoured onto I-495 southbound and directed to take Exit 54A, West Main Street in Hopkinton, before reversing direction back onto I-495 northbound.

In addition, the I-495 northbound ramp to I-90 eastbound and westbound, Exit 58, will close from 11 p.m. Tuesday through 5 a.m. Wednesday morning.

During that closure, drivers will be directed to use Exit 59B onto Route 9 westbound, reverse direction back onto I-495 southbound, then take Exit 58 to access I-90 eastbound and westbound.

MassDOT said signage, message boards and police details will be in place to guide motorists through the work zone.

Drivers are being urged to expect delays, reduce speeds and use caution while traveling through the area. Officials noted that all scheduled work is weather-dependent and may be affected by emergencies.

The latest closures come just days after MassDOT opened a new Exit 106 ramp connecting I-90 westbound to I-495 southbound as part of the multi-year project. The new traffic pattern separated the exits for I-495 north and south to improve traffic flow and safety at the busy interchange.

The temporary closures are part of ongoing work associated with the I-495/I-90 Interchange Improvements Project, which aims to modernize and enhance safety at one of the region’s busiest highway connections.

The project will replace the interchange; eliminate the old tooth booth and weaving areas; improve ramp spacing, acceleration and deceleration lanes; add an auxiliary lane from I-495 Northbound to Route 9; and construct new bridges on I-495 over I-90, on I-495 and I-90 over the MBTA/CSX/Amtrak lines, on I-495 Northbound over Flanders Road, and on Fruit Street.

The project is expected to be complete by June 2027.
