held its 7th Annual Fun Day yesterday with an indoor carnival at the school. Sponsored by the Armstrong Parent Group (APG), the event took place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and included games, activities and food for the entire family.
“This is our seventh year of putting on the Family Fun Day and we use the money generated to support our enrichment programs,” said Donna McCarthy, one of the co-presidents of the APG. McCarthy shares duties as president of the APG with Missy Miller.
“Our enrichment programs consist of different things. For an example, if our children were studying about dinosaurs, then we could use the enrichment programs to bring in a paleontologist to speak with the kids,” McCarthy said. She added that in the past they were able to raise about $8,000 and hoped that this year they would be able to match or best that total.

The activities included a magician, different games, a giant slide, a cake walk, face painting, san art, hair braiding, the Bob Splatter, temporary tattoos, food, and a plethora of baskets full of goodies that were raffled off.
One of the most popular spots for the boys was the Sponge Bob Splatter where the kids got to throw a water soaked sponge at a parent who was inside a Sponge Bob cut-out. This was ably manned by Scott Henderson, who encouraged the kids in attendance to give him a good soaking with the sponges. Asked why he volunteered for this particularly “wet job,” he laughed and said that his wife told him he was “a perfect fit for it.”

For the girls, the popular spots included face painting and the hair braiding stations where volunteers did some great work. Armstrong student Shelby Alcock was having a marvelous time getting her face painted while attending with her parents, as was pre-schooler Samantha Nelson who got her hair braided.
Included in the bake sale was a special section for “Sweet Caroline’s Scholarship,” named in honor of kindergarten teacher Lisa Doiron’s daughter Caroline who passed away at only 21 months old from the H1N1 virus. There will also be a Sweet Caroline’s Scholarship Skate on April 16 at Roller Kingdom in Hudson to raise money for a full scholarship to full day kindergarten at Armstrong Elementary School in Caroline’s memory.
