IMAGE GALLERY: Students Explore Science in Annual Fair
In case you were wondering, "Yes, you can make chocolate cheese."
The annual fifth grade science fair took place in the cafeteria on Thursday, March 8. From 8:30 to 11 a.m., over 250 students shared stories of their projects with visiting family, friends and teachers.
“They choose what they want to do. This is not a competition,” Principal Reene Hatherley told Westborough Patch. “There are at least a couple of hundred projects.”

Jessica and Joseph Goyette did experiments to find out what kind of chocolate melts the fastest. “We found that it’s milk chocolate because it doesn’t have fat or cocoa butter,” Jessica said.
“Did you know that the police use fossils to catch criminals?” asked Tomasha Hill. In her project, called What is a Fossil, Tomasha showed how to make fossils with plaster and explained why the police use the same technique to get images of footprints and other investigative clues.

Grace Desmond and Helena Spofford discovered that chopped fruit will last longer in a sealed plastic bag than in a paper bag. “The seal helps to keep the air out,” said Grace.
Jack Choate and Logan Goulet found that plants do not grow if watered with milk, vinegar, orange juice or cream soda. “Just the water worked,” said Jack. He and Logan included five small pots of planted seeds in their demonstration. Only one was sprouting.
“Yes, you can make chocolate cheese,” said Troy Kanji. On his exhibit board, Troy wrote about how people like chocolate and people like cheese, so why not try chocolate cheese? “This recipe worked the best for me,” he said as he pointed out the ingredients. At the bottom of his display were two plastic bags filled with what appeared to be a mushy brown substance, chocolate cheese.
“They do this for the love of learning, to peak curiosity and to learn about science,” Hatherley said. “They get their creative juices flowing. It’s wonderful learning.”
