Despite the relatively distant timeline, Ambrosino said she has already made some decisions about the carpeting. The new product will be installed in tile-like squares, each with its own padding.

“I’m hoping to add some color, which I can do with individual tiles,” she said.

“There is a moisture barrier between the top the carpet and padding,” Ambrosino said as she pointed out a black layer in a sample carpet tile. This will make cleaning spills easier than with the current padless carpeting, she said, and it will protect the new padding from moisture.

Ambrosino already contacted all nine contractors on the state bid list. The bids will include removing and disposing of the current carpeting on the main floor of the library. She said that the current carpet is glued onto wood flooring and has worn so badly that visitors can see the imprint of the wood floor below.

“The teen room is the worst,” she said.

The new installation will include carpeting under existing bookshelves, something that wasn’t done with the current carpeting and prevents moving shelving as needed.

Only carpet on the first floor is scheduled to be replaced. Ambrosino said that the basement will have to be done at a later time. “It would be really expensive and disruptive to do both the basement and upstairs at the same time.”
