Westborough Lions Club Hosts Seminar to Improve Quality of Life for those with Diabetes

Are you one of the 30 million American adults and children, 1 out of every 11 Americans, living with diabetes or care for someone who does? Due to the rising epidemic of this disease, Lions Clubs International has a strategic objective to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve the quality of life for those diagnosed. As part of this global organization and in collaboration with that effort, the Westborough Lions Club is hosting a Living Well with Diabetes seminar on Thursday, March 21st, at 7 p.m. at the Mill Pond School Auditorium, 6 Olde Hickory Path, Westborough. It is free and open to the public. The seminar is targeted for anyone living with Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes, their families, friends, or caregivers.

The event will feature two speakers. The first will be Kendra Magyar, Health Services Director at the Barton Center for Diabetes Education in N. Oxford, MA. She is a Certified Diabetes Educator and Nurse Practitioner, who herself has lived well with Type 1 diabetes for over 30 years. The second is Dr. Laura Alonso, an Endocrinologist at UMASS Memorial specializing in Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. She is also an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Beta Cell Biological Studies at UMASS Medical School. She heads a lab at UMASS Medical School studying Pancreatic Beta Cell Regeneration.

The program will include such topics as Food: Eating Well at Home and in Restaurants; Exercise: Its Benefits and Concerns; the Use of Technology and New Therapies on the Horizon; Support Systems and the Importance of a Positive Attitude; and The Barton Center for Diabetes Education: Its Camps and Programs. A Q&A session will follow the seminar.
