Who are the Library Trustee Write-Ins?

The annual town election is Tuesday.

Westborough voters may well meet their two newest library trustees at Tuesday's annual town polls.

A number of residents have expressed interest in running write-in campaigns for the post, trustees Chairman Patricia Fontes said Wednesday.

Two of the three three-year terms on the ballot drew no candidates before the 5 p.m. Jan. 11 deadline for filing nomination papers with the town clerk's office.

Incumbent Helena Engberg seeks re-election.  Incumbents Karen Griegal and Geralyn Kohler will not.

The top two write-in candidates receiving votes will be offered the seats, Town Clerk Nancy Yendriga has said. If either or both candidates decline, the trustees and the selectmen would fill each such vacancy by jointly appointing a resident to serve until the spring 2014 election, when the final two years of that term would be on the ballot, she said.

However, Fontes said residents Ed Baldwin and Kate Daly attended last Sunday night's candidates forum. And other residents have expressed interest in running as write-ins, she said.

"I'm eager to find out who is on the trustees after the election is over," Fontes said.

Fontes said the last time three trustees seats were open was when she first ran, during the early 2000s.

She and two other residents stepped up, she said.

"We typically have one opening, occasionally two," Fontes said.

Westborough Patch invites write-in candidates to submit letters to the editor to Michael.Gelbwasser@patch.com. The deadline is 5 p.m. Monday.
