Parents, teachers and students celebrate at ceremony and reception.
"I truly believe that these [National Honors Society] kids are our best and brightest... If they saw someone in need, they would stop and help," Westborough High School (WHS) Principal John Smith told Westborough Patch. Smith and the four officers of the WHS Chapter of the National Honors Society (NHS) awarded one senior, 17 juniors and 25 sophomores certificates and pins at an induction ceremony on Monday night, Jan. 30.
Before the ceremony, Karen Apuzzo Langton, a business teacher at WHS and advisor to the NHS, explained that acceptance into the society is based on scholarship, service, leadership and character. Students apply by completing a packet, which is evaluated "blind" by a committee of five.

During the induction ceremony, NHS officers Rachel Siegal (president), Parul Sharma (vice president), (secretary), and Zachary Silverman (treasurer) each spoke on the four pillars of the society. Parul Sharma commented, "We take the responsibility of paying it forward," when speaking of scholarship. She said that 50 percent of the students in the society were tutors.
Seventy current NHS members began the ceremony by passing a white carnation to each of the new inductees. After the certificates were awarded, the new inductees rose to recite the NHS induction pledge. The ceremony was followed by a reception.
