School Drug Testing Policy May Be Revoked
Superintendent Marianne O'Connor plans to make that suggestion to the School Committee.

may be revoked. Superintendent Marianne O’Connor told Westborough Patch that she plans to make that request at the May 23 School Committee meeting.
“Certainly, the committee’s proposal governing drug testing has merit when administration believes a student’s health or safety is at risk. We believe additional research and education is needed in order to continue to build trust among our students,” she said in an email. “We will continue to be vigilant in preventing drug use at school and at school sponsored events. Efforts to educate our students and parents to the inherent dangers associated with illegal substances will continue.”

Under the policy recently approved, if a student is suspected of being drunk or high, school officials may have that student submit to an alcohol breath and/or saliva test or face disciplinary action.
“We believe that the most effective deterrent to alcohol/drug use is openness and communication among students, parents and the school community, which corresponds with the attitudes and beliefs promoted in our school wellness programs and curriculum,” the policy states. “This collaborative effort is intended to enhance all aspects of school life in order to develop healthy, productive and high-achieving students.”

The policy includes:
- If the result of testing indicates that a student has consumed drugs or alcohol, school officials will release the student to the custody of a guardian and a meeting will be scheduled with school officials to discuss the findings.
- If the testing is negative, the student’s guardian will be contacted by phone and informed of the testing.
- If the student refuses to participate in the testing, the student’s guardian will be contacted and informed that the student may be subject to school disciplinary consequences based on an administrator’s determination that the student was under the influence of either drugs or alcohol.
O’Connor said she had extensive discussions with administration and members of the chemical health subcommittee which led to her decision to suggest a retraction of the drug testing policy. She said she hopes to return the focus on how the community can work together to help students make health choices, including avoiding drug and alcohol use.
O'Connor said, “As the school year comes to a close, our goal is to remain focused on the positive achievements of Westborough students and not be distracted by a premature drug test decision.”
