At this time of year, some families in an effort to demonstrate their appreciation give gifts to staff members. Although this is a very nice gesture and very much appreciated, please be reminded that school staff members are public employees and are subject to the State Conflict of Interest Law (Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 268A) and State Ethics Committee rules.
The statute states that school employees may not accept any gift that is of substantial value that is, no more than $50. This includes meals, tickets to events, services, or holiday gifts, among other things. This $50 limit applies to groups of people with a common interest (for example, members of the same class).

This law was enacted to ensure that members of the public are treated equally and that no one has or might be perceived to have special advantages. This applies even if the purpose of the gift is seen as a token of gratitude for a job well done.
If you do wish to give a gift, please consider making a contribution through the Westborough Education Foundation (WEF). WEF will ensure that the teacher receives notification acknowledging your gift made in his or her name. Donations to the WEF are tax deductible and all donations to the Foundation benefit teachers and programs in the Westborough Public Schools.
To make a donation, visit www.westborough.ma.schoolwebpages.com and fill out the form provided. For more information please contact wef@westborougheducationfoundation.com. Other suggestions are a gift to the Westborough Food Pantry or donating supplies to the classroom.
We in Westborough are very fortunate to have the generosity of so many families in so many ways. The School Committee and I would appreciate your cooperation in this matter. Please contact me should you have any questions.
