Westborough Firefighters Injured Battling Lightning Strike Fire

The two town firefighters were treated and released after the Friday night fire in Southborough following severe weather.

WESTBOROUGH, MA — Two Westborough firefighters injured battling a fire sparked by a lightning strike were treated and released from local hospitals over the weekend.

The Friday night fire broke in a home along Sears Road that was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm that rolled through during the evening hours. Firefighters from Westborough, Hopkinton, Ashland, Framingham and Marlborough all responded to help fight the fire.

One Westborough firefighter fractured his lower leg during the fight, and a second had smoke inhalation and burns. They were both treated at local hospitals. A Southborough firefighter also got stitches for a hand injury.

The lightning strike in Southborough was at least the second damaging strike in the area over the weekend. On Saturday, a lightning bolt punched a hole in the roof of a garage in Shrewsbury.
