Why WHS Missed Cut on 'Best Schools' List

When Boston Magazine published its recent ranking of the best 50 high schools, many in Westborough felt something was askew.

When Boston Magazine released its September 2011 issue with rankings of what it considered the top 50 high schools in the area, many questioned the notable absence of Westborough. Among the most perplexed was Superintendent Marianne O’Connor.

“I have called Boston Magazine several times and even called George Recck, director of math resources at Babson. According to the article, this was the research group assigned to the task,” O’Connor said.

Today, O’Connor received her answer. It came from Janelle Nanos, Boston Magazine senior editor.

“According to Janelle, this year for the first time, the research group decided to strictly adhere to the guideline that the high schools reviewed needed to be within [Route] 495. She assured me that the decision had no reflection on the district,” O’Connor told Westborough Patch.

O’Connor said that Nanos shared that the magazine was inundated with people inquiring about the results after the publication of Best Schools 2011: The Rankings. “We have heard you,” Nanos reportedly stated. According to O’Connor, Nanos said, “We do listen to your comments and concerns and will be clearer in the future regarding how the data is collected.”

“Hopefully, WHS will continue to be recognized as an outstanding high school by Boston Magazine,” said O’Connor. “We are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our students and our staff.”
