3/4/15 GARDENING TALK/DEMO: Natural Vegetable Gardening from the Ground Up with PAUL SPLIT

Thinking of starting a vegetable garden? Picking up where you left off last year but looking to make 2015's garden even more productive?

The Evening Garden Club of West Roxbury invites area residents to attend its March 4th lecture on “Natural Vegetable Gardening from the Ground Up” with popular speaker/horticulturist Paul Split.

Split has been part of the Green Industry since 1971 and was formerly Director of Horticultural for the Xfinity Center, Mansfield for over 25 years. A teacher since the 1970s, his past students have included Massachusetts Master Gardeners. Split regularly speaks and judges floral design competitions at the Rhode Island, Philadelphia, New York, Connecticut and various Massachusetts flower and garden shows, including Boston, Springfield and Worcester. He is also a chef and nationally recognized horticultural consultant.

According to Evening Garden Club president Ann Hopps Morgan, “Paul Split is much in demand. We are delighted to be able to bring him to West Roxbury as our March speaker.” Morgan, herself an avid veggie-grower since childhood, characterizes gardeners as “into one-upsmanship when it comes to our homegrown produce: we want bragging rights to the biggest tomatoes, the tenderest beans, the most prolific squash. As a result, we’re always on the lookout for ways to get better results.”

  • Soil profiles, raised beds and the benefits of composting
  • Fertilizing/watering best practices
  • Plant selection and starting plants from seed using a domed propagation chamber (One lecture attendee will win Paul Split’s demo unit.)
  • How to inter-plant vegetables, herbs and flowers for maximum yield and garden beauty

The lecture will be held March 4, 2015 at the Elks Lodge, 1 Morrell Street at the corner of Spring Street, West Roxbury, 7:00 PM to approximately 8:30 PM. Doors open for registration starting at 6:45 PM. Admission is $10.00; reservations are not required. Free parking is available, and light refreshments will be served. In the event of a weather emergency, visitors are encouraged to check the club’s web site for updates: http://gcfm.org/eveninggcwestroxbury/Home.aspx.
