Owner Katerina Iliades, whose family has served the Boston Greek community for decades, says many of the foods enjoyed during Lent reflect long-standing Greek culinary traditions. “Lent is a forty-day season leading up to Easter when many families embrace traditional fasting foods rooted in the Mediterranean diet,” says Iliades. “The dishes enjoyed during this time — from beans and vegetables to seafood and olive oil — have been part of Greek culinary traditions for centuries.” During the Lenten season, many Christians avoid meat and dairy, turning instead to a vibrant variety of Mediterranean dishes that are naturally plant-based and deeply rooted in Greek culinary tradition. Over the weekend before Thanksgiving, 3 West Roxbury girls danced in the New England Oireachtas in Providence, RI on behalf of the Heavey-Quinn Academy of Irish Dance. The Oireachtas is the regional championship of Irish Step Dancing that brings in more than 1,000 competitors from all over New England. The 3 girls were Norah and Maeve O'Toole and Marie Gormley (the niece of the Lord Mayor of West Roxbury, Richie Gormley). In particular, these 3 were a part of a 16 girl team that won the figure choreography competition. By winning, the team will be travelling to Montreal, Canada in the Spring of 2015 to compete in the World Championships of Irish Dance for this team dance. Congratulations ladies!
