Low Voter Turnout in West Roxbury So Far

Six-person state representative race is the hot ticket.

As of 11:30 a.m. only 84 out of 1,106 registered voters had cast ballots at the West Roxbury Police Station polling site.

While voters came and went from polling sites, the Holy Name Parish voting location, was easily the busiest, as it usually is.

At-Large Boston City Councilor John Connolly was at Holy Name and stumping for state representative candidate Ed Coppinger. Said Connolly, "I think there isn't a high profile race like a governor's race happening today. There is also a voter frustration with the economy, which may play a big role here."

Connolly added that he didn't think a low turnout would affect the six-person state rep race, but could affect some of the statewide elections. He said that as of 9 a.m. there had been 9,047 votes cast across the city with 1,393 of them coming out of Ward 20 in West Roxbury.

But voters weren't concerned about the turnout because they came to vote.

"I came to just narrow it down in the state rep race," said Adrian Gilmore, adding why she voted for certain candidates. "Whether or not people or pro-life or are for the community. I want to make sure they give back once elected."

"It's your civic duty to vote," said Kathleen Gibbons. "I always vote otherwise you can't voice your opinion. There are a lot of new faces (in the state rep race)."

"I'm interested in issues of what's going on in my life and what affects me," said Helen Resevic, a senior citizen.

Polls are open until 8 p.m.
