Residents Want West Roxbury to Remain Intact After City Council Redistricting

Residents discussed Boston City Council redistricting at Tuesday night's West Roxbury Neighborhood Council.

 

Last night's was well attended with residents concerned about the Boston City Council redistricting process.

The concern regards several proposed redistricting maps that would take a a small part of West Roxbury, specifically Ward 20, Precinct 3, and move it into District 5. The neighborhood would still remain a part of West Roxbury, but would be represented by the District 5 city councilor () instead of District 6's city councilor.

Boston City Council's Committee on Census and Redistricting chaired by Councilor Bill Linehan introduced the original redistricting plan taking off a portion of West Roxbury and adding it to the Hyde Park/Roslindale district. Ward 20, Precinct 3 is on Washington Street driving away from Boston toward Dedham, which includes the . Many councilors were not happy with Linehan's original map.

West Roxbury's District Councilor Matt . State Rep. Ed Coppinger, D-West Roxbury, has stated he wants West Roxbury to remain intact in one Boston City Council district, too.

The West Roxbury Neighborhood Council wrote a letter of opposition to this plan requesting that West Roxbury be left intact in the new districts, .

Before the WRNC meeting, O'Malley said there are about 10 redistricting maps inplay currently, with about four or so keeping West Roxbury intact. 

Redistricting is required every 10 years due to the US Census and population changes.
