Ward 20 Democratic Caucus Elects Delegates to State Convention

Delegates will attend state convention at UMass Lowell on June 4.

“With the 2012 election on the horizon, 2011 is a year of action.” Those were State Democratic Party chairman John Walsh’s words in a letter to Democratic caucuses across the state.

The Ward 20 Democratic caucus gathered at the this weekend to elect delegates for the 2011 Democratic State Convention in Lowell. The convention will occur on June 4 at the University of Massachusetts Lowell’s Tsongas Center.

In addition to normal proceedings, the convention will focus on training in party building, election techniques and issue based organizing.

Prior to the delegate elections, Boston City Councilors Felix Arroyo, John Connolly, Ayanna Pressley, Matt O’Malley and Stephen Murphy introduced themselves and thanked the caucus for their continued support and activism.

“I’m really glad that you are all here,” said Arroyo. “It says a lot about your neighborhood and it says a lot about your ward. You all help create change and you have your city councilors here because you care about what happens in this community.”

West Roxbury is a community long known for its civic engagement and political vigor, from supporting political candidates to combating neighborhood issues.

Ward  20 chairman John Cushing should know. “The people of ward 20 really care about their community and we continue to remain active and engaged,” said Cushing.

After the council introductions, caucus members who were present voted on the male and female delegate nominees.

The following female nominees were elected to attend the state convention: Sue Anderson, Anne Cushing, Helen Haugh, Marilyn LaRosa, Patricia Malone, Jennifer McGoldrick, Lisa Ochs, Diane Orthman, Elaine Feener, Cathleen Colman-Fiumara, Kay Ryan, Margaret Sullivan and Carol White.

 The following male nominees were elected by the caucus to attend the state convention: Leo Connell, George Donahue, Alex Geourntas, John Fumara, Don Feener, Bob Gordino, Tom Hantakas, Joe Haugh, Dave Isberg, Mike Pastore, Bill Smith, Steve Smith, Paul Sullivan and Rich Tarris.
