Buckmaster Pond Through a Historical Lens

The large body of water in Westwood is the result of a melted glacier form the Ice Age.

Hundreds of years ago, when Westwood was still known as "West Dedham", , part of the three "Great Ponds" that lie between Westwood and Medfield.

Today, Pond Plain Pond is known as , an area popular for picnics, , boating and other forms of recreation. 

The new name derives from that of local resident John Buckmaster, who was the first person to be buried in a nearby cemetery in January 1752.

In the late 1800s, Buckmaster Pond was used, along with the Charles River, as a main water supply as a fire safety measure. 

In 1885, Norwood was granted ownership of the pond to help expand the town's sparse water supply, and a pumping station for the pond existed where the parking lot now sits today.
