Gold Star Memorial Train to Pass Through Westwood

Those interested in spotting the train can see it pull into Rte. 128/Amtrak Station at 8:38 p.m. Wednesday.

The Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad's Gold Star Memorial Train is planning on stopping through Westwood this evening, Wednesday, June 13.

The train will pull into the at around 8:38 p.m. The train is decorated with a red, white and blue color scheme as well as 150 gold stars that were added for each name of every Massachusetts soldier, marine, sailor and airman/woman who lost their lives while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The train, the first of its kind in the United States, was unveiled before Memorial Day and is now on a journey across the MBTA's Commuter Rail system for the next two months.

The passenger coach will travel thousands of miles across Massachusetts and Rhode Island as a reminder of all of our fallen heroes who gave their lives during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

“With so many veterans employed by the railroad, it is a privilege to operate this one-of-a-kind traveling memorial for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and their families,” said MBCR General Manager Hugh J. Kiley Jr. in a statement. “MBCR is honored to operate the memorial train across the MBTA commuter rail system.”

The new train coach was unveiled at ceremony on May 24 in Boston’s South Station. 

“Massachusetts is proud to honor all veterans who have bravely served our Commonwealth and country,” said Lieutenant Governor Timothy Murray, Chair of the Governor’s Advisory Council on Veterans’ Services in a statement. “With the launch of the United State’s first-ever memorial train, Massachusetts will have the unique opportunity to recognize our military servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives for our country during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.”
