Ultimate Frisbee Club at Westwood High School is Getting reDISCulus

Frisbee club is one of the most popular clubs at Westwood High in Massachusetts

Popular high school sports such as football and basketball have often risen to the foreground, but in recent years, less conventional sports have been gaining ground. Take for example ultimate frisbee which now boasts upwards of 60 members. Yet many may not understand exactly what this sport even is. Ultimate frisbee (or often “Disc” colloquially) is a sport played by passing a plastic disc on a field similar to football, in that there are two endzones. Play is fast-paced, requiring players to be physically fit with great hand-eye coordination. The game is played without referees, and instead relies on the “spirit of the game” where the players call their own fouls.

The Westwood High School Ultimate Frisbee club is now entering its seventh year of existence. It has evolved from a simple after-school activity into a developed club that practices frequently, scrimmages against other towns, and will now enter tournaments in the fall. This year brings higher aspirations and excitement, with many new changes to the club. First and foremost, the membership of the group has more than tripled, becoming one of the most popular clubs in the school. The club also has an official uniform for the first time in history, with over 50 people ordering jerseys. While the frisbee season is mostly dormant in the winter, the team plans on competing with other schools in the spring through the Boston Ultimate Disc Alliance, or BUDA. During the late fall, the club already began gearing up for the season, scrimmaging other schools including Franklin, Sharon, Dover Sherborn, and Xaverian. The club is planning on fielding at least one team for competition in BUDA, and will play regular season games as well as tournaments, culminating in a run for the DIII state championship.
