Brockton Man in Weymouth Crash Faces Third Drunken Driving Charge

Police arrested a Brockton man early Sunday after he allegedly rear-ending another vehicle while driving under the influence of alcohol.
Robert Staples, 32, was charged with his third drunken driving offense and operating a motor vehicle to endanger according to the Weymouth Police Log. He was arraigned on Quincy District Court on Oct. 19 and was ordered held on $5,000 cash bail.
According to the police report, police received a responded to a crash at the intersection of Pond and Main Streets at 1:15 a.m. While in the parking lot at Factory Paint, the victim told police that he was at a red light at the intersection when another car, allegedly operating by Staples, struck him from behind.

Police asked Staples where he was coming from and where he was going, responding that he was driving to Brockton from Whitman. When asked why how he ended up in Weymouth, Staples asked if he was in Abington.
Staples was taken into custody have he refused to take a field sobriety test and police noticed that he had a strong odor of alcohol, glassy eyes, and slurred speech.

Previously, Staples was found guilty of drunken driving charges in 2004 in Stoughton District Court and in 2008 in Wareham District Court. He is due back in Quincy District Court for a pre-trial hearing on Jan. 5.
