I'm an above-average tournament player with years of experience teaching chess to children aged pre-school and up.   It wouldn't take long at all for your son or daughter to learn the game so don't feel intimidated that chess might be too difficult for them or that they're just too young or that you would somehow end up being stuck in neverending lessons.   If your goal is just having your child "know" how to play the game we can achieve that in just a handfiul of lessons.
