'Mighty Quinn' To Be Grand Marshal At Weymouth Irish Heritage Day
Three-year-old Quincy boy recovering from brain cancer, whose family is from Weymouth, will be celebrated at March parade and festival.

WEYMOUTH, MA — The Mighty Quinn will be the toast of the town in Weymouth once again this Saint Patrick's Day season. The Weymouth Irish Heritage Day committee announced Thursday that Quinn Waters, the 3-year-old Quincy boy whose family is from Weymouth, has been named the grand marshal of the March 29 festival in town.
It has been quite the whirlwind of honors for Waters, who has been recovering steadily from a brain tumor diagnosed shortly after his third birthday. When he was housebound as he underwent chemotherapy for medullo blastoma, Ken Casey of the popular punk rock band Dropkick Murphys, with members from Boston and Quincy, performed "Shippin' Up to Boston" and other songs in front of Quinn's window in August. In September, members of the Quincy Police Department — along with more than 50 police officers from across the state — presented Waters with a custom motorcycle, license plate and a sign that reads "Mighty Quinn Way" in the city.
Quinn has since dropped the first puck at a Boston Bruins game, and this week was a guest of the New York City Police Department at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

"We truly know the meaning of thankful this Thanksgiving — we are together and no one is in the hospital," Tara Waters, Quinn's mother and a Quincy police officer, posted on the family Facebook page dedicated to raising money and awareness for children battling cancer. "We are trying our hardest to make some memories because no one is guaranteed a tomorrow and no one knows what next thanksgiving holds — we certainly would never have predicted the year we just had last Thanksgiving."
The Weymouth Irish Heritage Day will include a parade down Union Street at 11 a.m. and a festival at Stella Tirrell Park to follow. The Irish Heritage Day is presented by South Shore Bank, while applications for other sponsors and vendors are now being accepted.
