Dozens Of MA Cops Visit Quincy 3-Year-Old With Cancer

Police across the state rallied around Quinn Waters, the son of Quincy police Officer Tara Waters, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

QUINCY, MA — It seems the entire state has rallied around Quinn Waters, a 3-year-old Quincy boy, who is isolated at home while he battles brain cancer. Last month it was the Dropkick Murphys who paid him a visit, and Tuesday, it more than 50 police officers from across the state stopping by Water's home and giving a custom motorcycle and other personalized gifts.

Last Februrary, Waters, the son of Quincy police Officer Tara Waters, was diagnosed with a brain tumor, known as medullo blastoma, shortly after his third birthday. Since the diagnosis, 95 percent of the tumor has been removed, but chemotherapy has left him home bound

Quincy police said Matt Hurley from the Massasoit Police Department organized the event. Officers from Quincy, Braintree, Natick, Mansfield, Auburn and several other Massachusetts police departments came out to show their support.

"I think the whole brotherhood of police officers has been behind them, as well as the community," Quincy Sgt. Karyn Barkas told Patch. "It's been amazing to see the support."

Other departments like Natick echoed the same sentiment about the relationship between police officers.

"It would be difficult to describe to most, the relationship between police officers, regardless if we actually know one another," Natick police said on Facebook, "Well, today, we understand exactly what that means."

Auburn police Detective Keith Chipman was among the officers to stop by and came with a custom police motorcycle. Police also gave a street sign that read "Mighty Quinn Way," named after the nickname Waters was given for his bravery and that he still seems to be a smiling, happy kid despite battling cancer.

It was another great day for Waters who has seen the community come out to support him on several occasions. Last month, the Dropkick Murphys held a private acoustic performance at the window to Water's bedroom. On Saturday, a family friend organized a motorcycle run down Green Street in Weymouth, where his family lives. They also held a fundraiser at Johnny Kono’s bar after.

"People have been amazing," Tara Waters said. "It's so great for Quinn who doesn't know any different and thinks he's having the best summer ever."

For those that want to help, Tara Waters said the best thing people can do donate blood and platelets to Children's Hospital in Boston in her son's honor.
