Ordinary Days: A Modern Musical opens this week at the Arsenal in Watertown
South Weymouth Resident and Lighting Designer, Melanie Popp, talks about her upcoming production of Ordinary Days, opening this week.
The Opposite of People, a new theater company in the greater Boston area, presents Ordinary Days: A Modern Musical, opening this week at the Arsenal Center for the Arts in Watertown.
One of musical theatre’s most exciting new composers, Adam Gwon, creates a score of vibrant and memorable songs, capturing with stinging clarity that uneasy moment in youth when doubts begin to cloud hopes for a future of unlimited possibility, and the connections that, knowingly or not, help you find your way. Ordinary Days is a refreshingly honest and funny musical that tells the story of four young New Yorkers whose lives intersect as they search for fulfillment, happiness, love, a cab, and a lost notebook.
Creating the lighting design for the musical is South Weymouth resident, Melanie Popp.

“I had never heard of Ordinary Days until The Opposite of People (TOP) reached out to me but I ended up falling in love with the simplicity of it,” Popp says. “It’s not a huge showy spectacular which I think makes he character stories that much more compelling.” Popp previously worked with TOP on their production of Romeo Juliet.
Popp works for Improv Boston during the day and just accepted a position as a lighting and pyrotechnic designer at Walt Disney World beginning in August. Ordinary Days will be Popp’s final Boston production. In her down time, Popp enjoys watching cooking shows with her boyfriend, “We try to try semi successfully to recreate what we see,” she says.
