South Shore Habitat for Humanity and radius financial group, inc. Break Ground for Duxbury Build on Wednesday, August 26

Local Town Officials and Supporters Commence 56th Habitat Home Build

Duxbury, MA (August 21, 2015) On Wednesday, August 26, 2015, Duxbury Town Officials and South Shore Habitat for Humanity supporters will break ground on the former Grange Hall site located at 153 Franklin Street. After almost seven years of planning, South Shore Habitat for Humanity is proud to partner with the Town of Duxbury to deliver its 3rd affordable home in partnership with the community.

Local residents, corporate partners and members of the faith community will spend the next 10 months volunteering their time and resources building this single-family home.

“We are excited to break ground and work together to bring the dream of homeownership to a local family,” said Martine Taylor, Executive Director of South Shore Habitat.

Selected Family Partners put in “sweat equity hours” alongside local volunteers on the construction of their home. These Family Partners purchase the home at cost and receive a 20-year, zero-interest mortgage from South Shore Habitat for Humanity. A perpetual deed restriction maintains the affordability status of each home. Habitat Family Partners are selected through a competitive process based on their ability to pay, willingness to partner and need for adequate housing. South Shore Habitat for Humanity offers a hand-up, not a hand-out.” Habitat doesn’t build these homes, communities build these homes,” said Taylor.

“The Town of Duxbury is very pleased to again be working with South Shore Habitat for Humanity in creating much needed affordable housing in our community. We look at this project as a continuation of our partnership which, over the years, has developed into an extremely positive relationship which has enjoyed the support from a broad range of interests sharing a common goal,” commented Town Manager René Read.

Chairwoman of the Duxbury Affordable Housing Trust (DAHT), Diane Bartlett, stated, “The DAHT is thrilled to have Habitat for Humanity as the successful bidder for the RFP for the land they will build upon. The community will be involved in supporting the efforts of Habitat in erecting a home for a family who is willing to partner with them. We look forward to welcoming the family to our community in the very near future.”

Participating in the ground breaking ceremony are two of South Shore Habitat’s partners. The Pilgrim Church of Duxbury who has donated $50,000 from their endowment fund to support this project.

“Pilgrim Church voted to give funds to the project because they too like Habitat believe that everyone, everywhere, should have a place to call home. We believe in helping others. We are a church that views Christianity as a verb. We are a church that believes in ‘doing the Gospel.’ We want to be the church that does things…helps others…fleshes out the Gospel and lends a helping hand to all people,” remarked Emily J. Kellar, Associate Minister of Pilgrim Church.

Also joining the ceremony are representatives from radius financial group inc. The partnership will include financial sponsorship of the Duxbury home, as well as, Sarah Valentini, radius financial group inc. principal, who was named South Shore Habitat for Humanity’s National Women Build Chairwoman, succeeding HGTV star and Weymouth native Taniya Nayak. “This new partnership is a perfect fit for us because we believe in reinvesting in our communities which is exactly what South Shore Habitat for Humanity does every day,” said Valentini. “I’m honored to be named the new National Women Build Chairwoman as they head into their 30th year and look forward to working with all of the great people that make up this fantastic organization,” explained Valentini.
