South Shore YMCA Frozen 5k Goes Virtual in 2021
The George "Trigger" Burke Frozen 5k virtual event invites everyone on the South Shore to run, walk, swim, bike, or hike on January 31

For the first time in its ten-year history, the South Shore YMCA George “Trigger” Burke Frozen 5k race will not begin at a single starting line on Coddington Street.
Due to COVID-19 safety measures that prevent large group gatherings, the South Shore YMCA has transformed this annual 5k race into an engaging and safe virtual event for the entire community.
The tenth annual George “Trigger” Burke Frozen 5k annual race to support Y youth programs will be held as an all-day event on Sunday, January 31, 2021. Racers may choose to run, walk, swim or bike their own personal 5k distance along an outdoor route of choice, or at the South Shore YMCA’s Quincy Y or Emilson Y in Hanover.

The race was named in 2019 for Quincy community advocate and local basketball legend George “Trigger” Burke, a longtime friend and supporter of the South Shore YMCA. “I’ve been an attorney in Quincy for 61 years and for 61 years I have loved the YMCA,” said Burke. “I sponsored the Frozen 5k this year, and I hope we will have a lot of runners. So, I invite you all to run and wish you good luck.”
Adults and children who register for the event can set a goal to finish their 5K distance at the Y or an outdoor route of choice. Registered participants are invited to complete their race at the Quincy YMCA or Emilson YMCA, where spin bikes, treadmills, pools, cardio equipment, indoor track, and other dedicated, physically distanced space will be available to bike, walk, run, swim or step their way to a virtual “finish line”. Free weekly “Couch to Frozen 5k” conditioning programs are also available for registered participants.

Proceeds from the South Shore YMCA George “Trigger” Burke Frozen 5K Event will benefit the Y's Annual Campaign, helping to fund financial assistance to ensure Y membership, youth programs, and services for all. Sponsorship opportunities are available.
