People are paying their respects as a procession makes its way through South Shore streets.

WEYMOUTH, MA — The police procession for fallen Weymouth Police Officer Michael Chesna has started. The 42-year-old husband and father of two was shot to death with his own gun Sunday while responding to a report of an erratic driver in Weymouth on Sunday morning.

Funeral services for Chesna will be held over the next two days. The wake will be held at the St. Mary of the Sacred Heart Church at 392 Hanover St. (Route 139) from 4-8 p.m. Thursday. A funeral Mass will be said at the church at 11 a.m. Friday.

Today's procession is being escorted by police into Hingham on Derby Street onto Rte. 53, through Norwell to Route 139 in Hanover to the church, police said. Residents are encouraged to line the streets.

Chesna died when responding to a report of an erratic driver on Route 18 Sunday morning. He was shot with his own gun by Emanuel Lopes, authorities said.

Lopes, 20, is being held without bail until a dangerousness hearing in August.
