Sam is a writer and Japanese translator. He graduated from Weymouth High School and UMASS, Amherst. He was awarded Grand Prize in the Japanese Literature Publishing
Project’s International Translation Competition in 2016, and won the 2019/2020 Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Prize for his translation of the novella Star by Yukio Mishima
(New Directions, 2019). Additionally, he is a founder and host of Us&Them, the quarterly Brooklyn-based reading series showcasing the work of writers who also translate.
With David Boyd, he is cotranslating the novels of Mieko Kawakami, most recently Breasts and Eggs (Europa Editions, 2020). Sam was raised in Weymouth, Massachusetts
and now lives in Portland, Maine.
