Canning Sweet Preserves, Fall Flowers, and Stargazing Workshops at Wright-Locke Farm
Make the most of the fall season by learning new skills for a lifetime
The autumn season is a wonderful time of year to get involved at Wright-Locke Farm (Winchester, MA). This fall, the Farm is offering a variety of practical skills workshops related to healthy living, small-scale agriculture, and the wonders of nature for adults and teens; some programs are also open to kids ages 8 and up when enrolling with an attending adult. Please note that all programs require registration via WLFarm.org to attend.
Join the Farm this Sunday 10/2 for our Introduction to Canning Applesauce and Sweet Preserves Workshop from 2 - 4pm at Saint Eulalia's Parish kitchen (50 Ridge Street, Winchester, MA). Learn the basic science of hot water bath canning and techniques for making delicious homemade jams, jellies, conserves, fruit sauces, whole and half fruits, and more. Education Director Rebekah Carter will lead this hands-on workshop that explains the necessary ingredients, equipment, and methods for safely making shelf-stable products at home on a small scale. Participants will help prepare and can pint jars of local applesauce to take home and enjoy.
Can't make it this weekend? Join us next week for a program! Savor the beauty of the autumn season with some Evening Yoga with Brittney Burgess from 7 - 8pm at the Farm. Set to the backdrop of the fields, this class is appropriate for all levels of yoga experience. Instructor Brittney Burgess will guide students through a vinyasa flow emphasizing a combination of power and flexibility through the dynamic combination of breath and movement.

On Wednesday October 5, the Farm will host a Fall Flowers Workshop with Ruth Trimarchi, who is overseeing the Farm's organic flower production this year. Learn how to make casual arrangements utilizing seasonally-available cultivated and wild flowers under the guidance of Ruth and the Farm's floral designers. The program will start with a brief tour of the Farm, during which time participants may gather additional materials for an arrangement to take home. After the tour, a few techniques will be presented, then participants will create an arrangement to enjoy at home. All materials, including plants and vessels (vases, jars, baskets, etc), will be provided by the Farm.
Sticking around town this Columbus Day Weekend? Consider signing up for our Fall Stargazing Workshop with Josh Roth on Saturday, October 8 from 6:30 - 8:30pm. This workshop is open to kids ages 8 and up when signing up with an adult. October is an ideal month to get to know the night sky, with its early sunsets, cool breezes, and even cooler constellations! Join astronomer and science teacher Josh Roth for an activity-packed two hours inside the barn and (weather permitting) under the stars. We’ll learn how to tell time and find our way by the stars; explore the universe of backyard telescopes; and discover how stars and galaxies can be enjoyed even with simple equipment under suburban skies.
